GSP visits international students in the UK and Ireland

London tops as best student city four years in a row

In the four years that QS has published this list, London has continuously secured its position at number one. “This year’s ranking is once again topped by London. Home to several leading universities, including UCL (University College London), Imperial College London, and King’s College London, the city has been a student favourite for years and has plenty of world-class academic institutions for students to choose from”, says QS about London bagging the top spot once again for the latest rankings.

Ireland’s economy and opportunities attract more international students

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Ireland has emerged with the fastest-growing economy in Europe. According to IBIS World, Irish GDP still grew at a nominal rate in 2020 despite the massive disruption to economic activity caused by COVID-19. A significant growth in GSP followed in 2021 where it doubled from 6.2% to 13.6%, making Ireland the fastest-growing economy in the EU.

Diverse preference of students studying in the UK

An interesting finding from Prospects Luminate’s Early Careers Survey 2023 shows that managing finances overtook mental wellbeing as the main issue faced by young people in the past year. More than half of participants (52%) said ‘Money’ was the biggest challenge of the last year, followed by ‘Balancing commitments’ (51%), ‘Taking care of my mental health’ (50%), and ‘Keeping motivated’ (48%) – these four held a clear lead over other concerns.

Postgraduate research programs in the UK and Ireland

In May 2023, the UK government announced a new policy where international students will no longer be able to bring their dependants – family, partners, and children – with them into the country for the duration of their studies. Only students enrolled in postgraduate courses designated as research programs, such as PhD students or research-led masters courses, will be exempt. This new policy will take effect by January 2024 to give aspiring international students time to prepare and plan ahead.
