New York facilitates internship opportunities for Indian students

Indian students studying in New York will now have opportunities to secure internships through a new initiative launched by the Indian Consulate. According to a recent announcement, several Indian and American businesses and organisations have agreed to consider deserving Indian students for internships.

The Indian Consulate has advised students to apply directly to the companies as per the details provided on the portal, emphasising that it does not play a role in the selection process for internships. The portal serves as a comprehensive resource, offering not only internship listings but also information on experts providing psychological and healthcare advice to Indian students.

To extend further support, the Consulate highlighted that Indian students and the diaspora can seek legal assistance or guidance from legal experts and attorneys across ten states under the jurisdiction of the Indian Consulate in New York. This outreach aims to address various challenges experienced by the Indian student community in the US.

New York is home to one of the largest cohorts of Indian students in the United States, with over 32,000 Indian students currently studying in the Empire State. This significant population has prompted a range of initiatives tailored to support their needs. Among these is an open house event held on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month, where Consulate officials meet with students to address their issues and concerns.

Despite the hurdles faced by some Indian students and professionals in recent years, Indian students continue to constitute a significant portion of the international student body in the US. They make up 25% of the over one million international students in the country. According to an Open Doors Report, the number of Indian students in the US reached an all-time high of 268,923 during the academic year 2022-2023, marking a 35% increase.

The Indian Consulate in New York’s initiative to facilitate internships is a crucial step in supporting the professional growth of Indian students in the US. By providing access to valuable resources and creating platforms for legal and psychological support, the Consulate aims to enhance the overall well-being and success of Indian students residing in the state and beyond.
