Immigration New Zealand now accepts IELTS One Skill Retake

Immigration New Zealand has announced a groundbreaking change in its visa application process by accepting the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) One Skill Retake option. This move holds significance for international students aiming to study in New Zealand, streamlining the visa and migration application process through a more tailored language assessment approach and reducing pressure on applicants.

The IELTS One Skill Retake is already acknowledged by over 900 organizations globally, including UK Visas & Immigration, the Australian Department of Home Affairs and various professional bodies such as Engineers Australia and Chartered Accountants ANZ. The decision by Immigration New Zealand to accept the IELTS One Skill Retake signifies a significant shift in their visa assessment protocol. This transformation aims to cater to the evolving needs of applicants, fostering a more inclusive and accessible process.

Proving English proficiency is a crucial step for international students who are aspiring to study, work or settle in New Zealand. However, the task of achieving the desired score in an IELTS test can pose challenges. Immigration New Zealand’s acceptance of the IELTS One Skill Retake option offers a more flexible approach to language proficiency evaluation.

The IELTS One Skill Retake option offers a solution that allows applicants a 60-day window after their full IELTS test to retake a specific section—Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking—if they didn’t achieve their desired score in that section during their first attempt.

This ensures that they meet English language requirements without redoing the entire test while maintaining the gold-standard quality of assessments while offering flexibility for applicants to fulfill their immigration aspirations.

This opportunity for international students reduces the burden of retaking the entire four-skills test and enables them to focus on specific areas needing improvement. The initiative also reflects a progressive approach in recognising language diversity, guaranteeing a fair and comprehensive evaluation of language proficiency for prospective students.
