What is the Duolingo test validity?

The Duolingo English test (DET) has become widely accepted in the educational community for its ability to properly assess a person’s grasp of the English language. Many people prefer it over other tests as it is fast, convenient and affordable. For test takers and institutions alike, however, it’s important to note that the Duolingo test validity is only two years. After that, test takers will have to retake the exam for a more accurate gauge of their English proficiency.

In this article, we tackle frequently asked questions about the Duolingo language test, including its scores, validity and acceptability.

What is the Duolingo English Test?

The Duolingo English test is an English proficiency exam that examines a candidate’s reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. It’s available online, on-demand for only US$59 for a single test (or US$98 for a package of two) plus applicable taxes.

The DET is a computer-adaptive test that changes in difficulty as the test taker answers questions, depending on the result of their previous answer. It consists of three parts: introduction and onboarding, adaptive test and writing, and speaking sample. The first part checks device functionality and introduces the exam’s rules and requirements. Then the second part is the test proper, which includes a writing sample. Finally, the last part is a question-and-answer portion that includes a one to three-minute video interview. The entire Duolingo test only takes about an hour to accomplish.

DET results are certified within two days. Test takers receive a score between 10 to 160 in increments of five points. This scoring system aligns with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), an international standard for language proficiency.

DET vs. other language assessment tests

The Duolingo English Test is similar to the IELTS and TOEFL in that it’s designed to measure a person’s English language proficiency. That said, there are several differences between these three tests.

The DET is a completely computer-based test, while the IELTS and TOEFL both have paper-based options, i.e. test takers can take the exam in person at select testing centres. The DET is cheaper and faster to do, with the IELTS and TOEFL more than double the price and length. In terms of scoring, the DET and TOEFL follow the same points-based system. The IELTS, on the other hand, is scored on bands.

What is a good score on the Duolingo English Test?

Duolingo English Test scores range from 10 to 160 in five-point increments. Generally, a score of 120 or above is considered a good score. It’s equivalent to the 6.5–9 band in IELTS, 87–120 in TOEFL and an upper-level B2 to C2 level in the CEFR. A 120 score is often the baseline for university English language requirements.

An individual who receives a score of 120+ on the DET has a strong understanding of the English language. They can communicate using a diverse set of language and grammar structures verbally and in writing, and can easily understand complex materials.

How many times can one take the Duolingo English Test?

People can take the Duolingo English Test as many times as they’d like. However, they may not take it more than three times in 30 days. Moreover, test takers can only apply to take the exam again after the results of their previous attempt have been declared.

Since the DET is an adaptive test, it changes each time; test takers will likely find it hard to get the same questions. This makes it very effective at evaluating one’s English skills.

How long is the Duolingo English Test valid?

The Duolingo test validity is two years. After that, test takers will still be able to see their expired results on their account. However, they will no longer be able to view their certificate or share these results with others. Those who wish to reassess their proficiency must retake the exam.

Where is the Duolingo English Test accepted?

The Duolingo English Test is accepted by over 5,000 universities and institutions worldwide. Once they receive their results, test takers can send their scores to as many schools as they want for free.
