#WeAreInternational campaign shines light on pathway routes in UK Higher Education

Led by the Universities UK International (UUKi), the #WeAreInternational: Transforming Lives campaign celebrates the vital role of pathway routes to UK higher education. After a decade since it started, the campaign, relaunched in 2023, aims to feature the contributions of international students. It also puts focus on their experiences, achievements and the broader impact these students have on UK communities.

Andy Howells, who led the campaign’s relaunch at UUKi, stressed the importance of celebrating international student voices. “It is extremely important that we continue to champion the international student voice, to tell the impactful story of the contributions international students make to the UK; to celebrate their success; to empower them to share the transformative journey and experience they are having,” he remarked.

The #WeAreInternational campaign has effectively highlighted the unique perspectives and experiences of international students who come to the UK via pathway routes. Additionally, a reportreveals that these pathways are not only beneficial for students but also for the UK economy, contributing an estimated ÂŁ830 million in 2023 alone.

In its final feature, the campaign spotlights Victoria, an international student from Peru who utilised a pathway route to pursue her music degree in the UK, where she is now in her final year.

“Even though I moved to a different continent, I was surprised how quickly I adapted,” Victoria said. “I’ve learned so much. I don’t even recogni[s]e myself now and I wouldn’t have gained this perspective without my UK experience. I’m deeply grateful to have been given the opportunity to study here. I would do it all again in a heartbeat.”

The report also illustrated the broader impact of pathway programs, stating that these aid to standardise international education, provide a well-rounded foundation for academic success and support diversification in higher education.

Welcoming international students to the UK is crucial for fostering global connections, promoting cultural understanding and enriching the academic experience for everyone. Notably, international students have a substantial economic impact, contributing £41 billion annually to the UK, as reported by UUKi.

Moreover, the campaign exemplifies the profound impact international students have and their invaluable contribution to UK universities and communities–both in the academic and cultural landscape of the UK.

As the #WeAreInternational campaign concludes, it leaves behind a powerful narrative of transformation and inspiration, encouraging future international students to embark on their own educational endeavours in the UK.
