UK student visa requirements

It may seem daunting to some, but when done thoroughly with clear directions and realistic timelines, it can be an easy process. UK student visa application: eligibility and requirements

According to the UK government, those looking to apply for a student visa to study in the UK may do so if they:

  • are of appropriate age

Applicants must be 16 or over to be able to apply. If they’re 16 or 17, they must have consent from their parents. If they’re under 18 and want to study at an independent school in the UK, they might be eligible for a Child Student visa instead.

  • have been offered a place on a course by a licensed student sponsor

The institution that they’ve applied and been accepted to must be licensed to sponsor migrant students. There are also specific classifications of courses that align with visa application requirements—the list may be found here.

  • can provide proof of their financial capacity

Applicants must show that they have sufficient funds to support themselves and pay for their course fees. Tthe amount will vary depending on the applicant’s circumstances and where they will be studying.

  • can speak, read, write and understand English

Applicants* are asked to demonstrate their proficiency in the English language either by:
(1) passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider or
(2) having a GCSE, A level, Scottish National Qualification level 4 or 5, Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English, gained through study at a UK school that they began when they were under 18.

There are many great SELT options, one of which is the IELTS SELT Consortium. The typical IELTS score for UK student visa applications must be a 5.5 overall, and in each of the four skills. The minimum Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level equivalent is B2.

*Some applicants are exempt from having to prove their knowledge of English upon application. 

Other UK student visa requirements

All applicants must provide a current passport or other valid travel documentation and a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). The latter is a reference number given by their education provider. Depending on specific circumstances, some applicants may also need to provide any of the following:

  • a valid Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate (if their course and nationality require it)
  • proof of parental or other legal guardian consent (if they’re under 18)
  • proof of their relationship to their parent or guardian (if they’re under 18)
  • tuberculosis test results
  • written consent for their application from their financial sponsor (if they’ve received sponsorship for their course fees and living costs in the last 12 months).

 

UK student visa application: process

International students can conveniently apply for a UK student visa online. This can be a breeze if one is well-informed, prepares ahead and follows the steps efficiently. Here’s an overview of the UK student visa application process to help you equip your students with proper guidance as they go through their applications. To apply for a UK student visa, the applicant must:

  1. Review the eligibility criteria to ensure they qualify to apply for a UK student visa.
  2. Gather all their required documents (as outlined above).
  3. Visit the UK government’s online visa application service and create an account.
  4. Fill out the online application form accurately, providing personal details, course information and immigration history.
  5. Pay for the visa application fee. It costs £490 to either apply for a student visa from outside the UK or to extend or switch to a student visa from inside the UK.
  6. Pay for the healthcare surcharge. The student visa health insurance UK allows international students to access the National Health Service (NHS) and costs £776 per year for students.
  7. Schedule an appointment to provide their biometric information (fingerprints and photograph) at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) or a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) centre.
  8. Attend their biometrics appointment at the designated location.
  9. Double-check all information provided in the application form and supporting documents before submitting their application online.
  10. Allow time for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to process their application. Processing times vary depending on location and the time of year. However, a decision is usually given within three weeks, if applying from outside the UK, or eight weeks, if applying from inside the UK.
