Taking a PhD program abroad

A PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is the highest level of degree a student can obtain. It’s a globally recognised achievement awarded by higher education institutions to candidates who have submitted a rigorously researched original thesis or dissertation in their chosen field. Many universities worldwide offer top PhD programs, encouraging students to leave their home countries to pursue further studies abroad.

In this article, we explore the benefits of taking a PhD program abroad. We also walk through what one needs to take this step so you can properly guide interested international students.

Why take a PhD program abroad

Why take a PhD? Taking a PhD program abroad is very beneficial for students who want to expand their network and career opportunities, build their skills and experience the culture of another country. Here are some reasons why taking a PhD program in a different country might be the best option.

Academic progression

While most PhD programs are similar around the world, each country may have a slight variation that would make them more suitable to certain students. For example, some PhD programs are shorter, don’t require teaching experience or cost much less. Expanding one’s options beyond home may open up more ideal opportunities for academic progression.

Network building

Taking a PhD already effectively builds one’s network as these programs allow one to engage with other professionals in the field, setting the foundation for lifelong friendships and partnerships. A degree done abroad widens this network even more as students collaborate with people from various backgrounds.

Career advancement

PhD holders exhibit a high level of expertise in their field, often making them more appealing to employers. This gives them plentiful career advancement opportunities – and when their degree is completed abroad, their prospects expand even further in the global marketplace. They can choose to set up their career back home, in the country they’re studying in or anywhere that requires their skill and knowledge.

Skill development

Pursuing a PhD abroad develops plenty of skills, not just from the academic experience, but also from the exposure to independent life. Living away from the comforts of familiarity challenges one to be more self-sufficient, which is a valuable trait to have in general.

Cultural exposure

One of the main advantages of studying abroad is cultural exposure. By immersing oneself in a foreign environment, a student gets to learn more about another country’s culture, language and people. This experience also teaches a student to be more open and curious, which are important should they decide to take a career in a place far from home.

What do I need to take a PhD program abroad?

What a student needs to take a PhD program differs slightly from those needed for an undergraduate or a Master’s degree. Here’s a look into the common requirements a student must complete to pursue a PhD abroad.

Academic curriculum vitae

The basic entry eligibility for a PhD program is generally grade-based. That is, students are typically required a certain academic qualification, such as an Honours degree or a Master’s degree with high academic standing, to enter a course. This is often proven through an academic curriculum vitae (CV) or a transcript of records; students may also need to submit their resume. It’s also advisable for students to provide information on any research projects or publications they’ve participated in.

Research proposal

PhD applicants are expected to submit a PhD research proposal, which they shall work on during their program. A research proposal should:

  • outline proposed topics based on the student’s previous work
  • highlight one’s awareness of the field
  • identify gaps in current knowledge
  • suggest a relevant research hypothesis
  • propose a research methodology
  • discuss the research’s implications for the field.

It’s recommended that students consider their research intentions when choosing where to take a PhD abroad. Admission to a program may depend on whether or not one’s work aligns with the universities’ priorities, facilities and expertise.

Some subject areas don’t ask for original research proposals. Instead, the institution provides a list of research projects, and interested candidates shall submit a statement demonstrating an expertise or understanding of a chosen topic and their qualifications to take it up.

Personal statement

Universities often ask PhD candidates for a personal statement. This is a short essay on one’s intention to take up the degree, including motivations, relevant activities and interest in the field. It should demonstrate one’s passion for their research and thoroughly explain their qualifications for the chosen program and institution.

Employment or academic references

Many PhD applicants are asked to provide references from two to three people who can attest to their academic abilities and potential. These may be teachers they’ve studied under or professionals they collaborated with, especially in a research capacity. Some institutions also require backing from a tenured professor from the chosen university, as this person shall be the student’s advisor during their program.

Proof of language proficiency

To be able to obtain a PhD abroad, students must ensure that they can understand the language used in their program. Most institutions will require proof of language proficiency in their primary medium of instruction (e.g. English in the US). Students should note the specific requirements as schools may accept certain standardised test results over others. Some universities may also accept evidence of having completed a lower level of study in the relevant language as adequate proof of proficiency.
