The Subclass 500 Student visa

The Australian student visa, officially known as the Subclass 500 Student visa, permits international students to participate in an eligible course of study in Australia. It allows them to travel in and out of the country and work up to 48 hours per fortnight during their course of study, for a duration of up to five years (aligned with the applicant’s enrolment).

To be eligible for a Subclass 500 Student visa, the applicant must:

  • apply online in or outside of Australia
  • be six years old or older (or pass the age requirement of their course)
  • be enrolled in a course of study in Australia
  • meet English language requirements
  • hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) or fall in one of the exemption categories
  • have enough money for their stay
  • be a genuine temporary entrant (i.e. pass the GTE requirement)
  • meet character and health requirements
  • sign the Australian values statement
  • prove they have a welfare arrangement (if under the age of 18)
  • have no debt to the Australian government (if any, they must have paid it back)
  • hold an eligible substantive visa (if in Australia; note that any substantive visa ceases to be in effect if another is granted)
  • have not had a visa cancelled or an application refused.

 

Australian student visa requirements

The Australian Department of Home Affairs provides a list of Australian student visa requirements. Typically, students must submit the following:

  • completed Australian student visa application form
  • payment of the student visa application fee
  • copy of passport biodata page (some applicants may be required to provide their physical passport)
  • certificate of enrolment or letter of offer from an Australian institution
  • evidence of sufficient funds to cover tuition, travel and living costs (minimum AUD 24,505 in savings)
  • English proficiency test results
  • evidence of good health, along with health insurance coverage
  • criminal record check results (and, if necessary, a penal clearance certificate or police statement and a character statutory declaration)
  • passport-sized photos.

 

How to get an Australian student visa

Here’s a step-by-step guide to the Australian student visa application process:

1. Get accepted into an Australian study program

Before a student applies for a Subclass 500 Student visa, they must already be accepted into an Australian educational institution. After receiving a letter of acceptance, the individual must pay the tuition fee. They will receive a Certificate of Enrollment (CoE), which is required for the student visa application.

If the student is doing multiple programs, they must obtain a CoE for each one.

2. Create an ImmiAccount

Australian student visas are typically processed online through the Australian Department of Home Affairs immigration platform. The ImmiAccount is where applicants must submit all their requirements and where they can track their visa application status.

3. Gather all requirements

Gather all the requirements needed for the student visa application. When applying online, all documents must be digitised (i.e. scanned and uploaded in a digital format). Everything must also be in English. If the documents are in another language, they must be translated by a certified translator.

If the student is missing some documents, they can save their application and then continue later on.

4. Complete the visa application

Applicants must complete their Subclass 500 Student visa application at least eight weeks before their program starts (as stated on their CoE).

5. Pay the visa application fee

After completing their application, the student must pay a fee of AUD 710.00. This won’t be refunded whether or not the student visa is accepted. After paying, the applicant will receive a Transaction Reference Number (TRN) that they can use to rack their application online.

6. Prepare for a possible health checkup and interview

Depending on the details of the student’s application (e.g. where they’ll live), they may have to undergo a health checkup and/or interview. The student will know if they need to do this after they submit their application and pay the fee. It’s important not to proceed with the health checkup prior to completing these two steps. Health checkups must also be done by doctors approved by Australian immigration.

7. Wait for the visa decision

Processing an Australian student visa typically take a few weeks, but the Australian government has recently announced faster processing times for visa applications, including an improved turnaround time of as quick as 16 days (previously it took up to 49 days) for student visa applications. This may be longer or shorter depending on the quality of the application and how busy the Australian immigration authorities are.

After an Australian student visa is processed, the applicant will get an email notification of the result. The visa is electronic, but students may print the visa grant letter and show this with their passport when they travel to the country for their studies.

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485)

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485 visa) allows international students to stay in Australia for two to four years after they have finished their studies. It also allows them to travel and study in the country during this period. Some graduates who have finished select degrees (according to the list of occupations and qualifications eligible for post-study work rights extension) may extend their stay for an additional two years.

Students applying for the subclass 485 visa can do so through the following streams:

Post-Study Work stream

The Post-Study Work stream is the most common path towards post-study work rights in Australia. It’s available for international students who have recently graduated from an Australian institution and want to remain in the country temporarily to pursue work. It allows stays between two to four years, depending on the applicant’s qualifications. Some students holding select degrees may be eligible for an extended two-year stay.

Graduate Work stream

The Graduate Work stream is intended for graduates who can perform duties relevant to the needs of the Australian job industry. It is designed for international students who have recently graduated with qualifications relevant to an occupation on Australia’s skilled occupation list. This stream enables applicants to stay in Australia for up to 18 months, providing them the opportunity to live, study and work temporarily in the country.

Second Post-Study Work stream

The Second Post-Study Work stream is available to holders of a first Post-Study Work stream visa or a Replacement stream visa (more on that later) who graduated with a degree from an Australian institution in a regional area. Individuals with this visa can stay for a duration ranging from one to four years, depending on the location of the institution where they graduated and the specific regional area associated with their first Temporary Graduate visa. Similar to the Post-Study Work stream, select applicants may also apply for an extra two years’ stay through this stream.

Replacement stream

The Replacement stream is a pandemic-related visa stream designed for current and former Temporary Graduate visa holders who experienced disruptions and lost time on their original visa due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. The Replacement stream grants stays ranging from 18 months to six years.

 

Australian post-study work visa eligibility requirements

To obtain a Temporary Graduate visa, the applicant must:

  • be under 50 years old
  • hold a student visa or a substantive visa
  • have an eligible qualification at degree level or above
  • meet the Australian study requirement
  • have studied with an Australian education provider
  • pass an English proficiency test
  • meet the necessary health and character requirements
  • sign the Australian values statement
  • have no debt to the Australian government
  • have not had a visa cancelled or an application refused.

 

How to apply for a post-study work visa in Australia

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to apply for a post-study work visa in Australia:.

Get confirmation of degree completion

Before anything, the student must prepare their passport and check their visa conditions. They should also consult with their education provider and obtain confirmation that they have successfully completed their course.

Applicants should apply for the Temporary Graduate visa within six months of their official date of degree completion.

Gather the necessary documents

The student should determine the requirements for the specific stream through which they’d like to get their post-study work visa, after which they must gather and prepare all the necessary documents to support their application. These typically include:

  • identity documents
  • study documents
  • English language proficiency test results
  • health insurance documents
  • character documents
  • partner documents or documents for dependents under or over 18 (if applicable).

Apply for the visa

Students can apply for the subclass 485 visa online. To do this, they must create or log in to their ImmiAccount, where they must attach their gathered documents, pay the visa application charge (AUD 1,895, except the Replacement stream which costs AUD 745) and submit their application within the eligibility timeframe.

After applying, the student may need to complete health exams (they will be notified after submitting their application).

Wait for the results

Visa application results will be made in writing. Those who are granted a Temporary Graduate visa will be given their visa grant number, the date when their visa starts and their visa conditions. Refusals will come with an explanation and an opportunity to review the decision. Note that, regardless of the result, the visa application charge cannot be refunded.

Universities in these countries often promise higher-quality education, which expands the career prospects of those who get into them. For aspiring international students, one of the most important things to keep in mind is intake dates. These are the time when schools start accepting applications for the next term. For 2024, it’s as follows: January to May for Spring Intake, May to August for Summer Intake and September to December (or up to early January) for Autumn Intake.

 

Study abroad intake dates

Intake dates vary between universities and programs. Generally, they’re divided into three key periods: Autumn Intake, Spring Intake and Summer Intake. Here’s some useful information about each one:

Autumn Intake

Autumn Intake is the primary intake for almost all universities. It’s usually from September to December (though some universities accept applicants as early as August). During this time, students can take advantage of a large number of available courses. There’s also an abundance of scholarships and internship opportunities. That said, this intake also sees the most number of applicants, which overall lowers the general acceptance rate.

It’s recommended that students prepare at least 10 months to a year before the beginning of Autumn Intake to ensure they have everything they need when the admissions period rolls in.

Spring Intake

Spring Intake is the secondary intake season and may even be seen as an extension of the Autumn Intake. It begins in January and ends in May, and it gives students another chance to secure admission to an international institution of their choice. In some places, particularly Canada and the UK, courses begin in January. Spring Intake is also sometimes referred to as Winter Intake.

Not all universities offer Spring Intake, especially for popular courses, so choices at this period are often less. However, since there are typically fewer applications, acceptance rates are higher and class sizes are smaller. Those who apply during Spring Intake also have more time to prepare for their applications and other pre-requisite exams.

Summer Intake

Summer Intake is usually from May to August. It’s a unique situation where universities allow a select group of students to apply to certain courses, like short courses, diploma programs and language courses. This is the best time to apply for students who are interested in programs only available in the summer or who missed the Autumn and Spring Intake seasons.

Summer Intake doesn’t usually apply to international students, and it’s the least preferred intake period due to the lack of available courses and the limit of universities offering enrolments during this time. But competition is low, so those applying have greater chances of getting accepted to the university and course they want.

 

Intake dates in key study abroad destinations

Now that we’ve broken down the different key intake periods, here’s a guide on the important admissions dates to remember in key study-abroad destinations:

USA

Intakes in the USA fall from September to December (Autumn Intake) and January to August (Spring Intake), with Summer Intake occurring between May and August. Many top universities, including Johns Hopkins University, the University of Arizona and Yeshiva University, accept Autumn Intake applications. It’s best to check the individual requirements of each school for exact dates.

Canada

The primary intake period for Canadian universities is September, with deadlines falling in January (Autumn Intake). Spring Intake is from January to May, while Summer Intake is from May to August. Popular universities offering Autumn Intake applications include the University of Ottawa, Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria.

Australia and New Zealand

The main intake in Australia is in February, with application deadlines falling in October of the previous year. The same is true for New Zealand. Some top choices for this region include the University of New South Wales, the University of Melbourne and the Australian National University.

United Kingdom

September is the main intake period for universities in the United Kingdom. Deadlines for Autumn Intake are usually in January. Spring Intake runs from January to April, while Summer Intake is from May to August. The University of Bristol, the University of Aberdeen and City, University of London are some of the top choices for international students wishing to study in the UK.

Australia gains popularity among international students as a top study destination

The numbers have spoken: Australia is now joining the likes of Canada and the United Kingdom as one of the most sought-after study destinations for international students. 

As revealed by a recent survey of over 14,000 international students from 147 countries, one in five students have changed their minds over the past 12 months about where they want to pursue their studies abroad. Among those who changed their minds, one out of three named Australia as their new top study destination. 

What’s behind the surge? 

Australia’s growing popularity among international students is a much-welcomed change of tide for the country’s international education sector, which has been through a rough patch since the onslaught of COVID-19.  Many international students were unable to study in Australia during the pandemic due to its closed borders and lockdown policies, but with the world’s official entrance into the post-pandemic era, combined with several improvements in the availability of opportunities for foreign students in Australia, more and more of them are seeing the country as a safe and attractive choice.

Here are five of the most popular reasons that have sparked Australia’s rise in popularity. 

  • Better visa-processing — Common delays in visa-processing used to be a significant pain point for students who were considering studying in Australia, the Australian Government is now supporting its Department of Home Affairs to address these as an urgent priority. Since May of 2022, the Depapartment has employed nearly 140 new staff in visa processing roles. 
  • Uncapped work hours — As a result of rising global inflation and cost of living, the ability to work while studying is a priority for a significant proportion of international students in 2022. Australia has removed the cap on the number of hours that international students can work until June of 2023; reflecting this, 36 percent of the students who switched their top countries to Australia cited better job opportunities as their reason. This improved work-study policy allows international students much better chances to earn enough money to live more comfortably during their stay abroad.
