Australia gains popularity among international students as a top study destination

The numbers have spoken: Australia is now joining the likes of Canada and the United Kingdom as one of the most sought-after study destinations for international students.

As revealed by a recent survey of over 14,000 international students from 147 countries, one in five students have changed their minds over the past 12 months about where they want to pursue their studies abroad. Among those who changed their minds, one out of three named Australia as their new top study destination.

What’s behind the surge?

Australia’s growing popularity among international students is a much-welcomed change of tide for the country’s international education sector, which has been through a rough patch since the onslaught of COVID-19.  Many international students were unable to study in Australia during the pandemic due to its closed borders and lockdown policies, but with the world’s official entrance into the post-pandemic era, combined with several improvements in the availability of opportunities for foreign students in Australia, more and more of them are seeing the country as a safe and attractive choice.

Here are five of the most popular reasons that have sparked Australia’s rise in popularity.

  • Better visa-processing — Common delays in visa-processing used to be a significant pain point for students who were considering studying in Australia, the Australian Government is now supporting its Department of Home Affairs to address these as an urgent priority. Since May of 2022, the Depapartment has employed nearly 140 new staff in visa processing roles.
  • Uncapped work hours — As a result of rising global inflation and cost of living, the ability to work while studying is a priority for a significant proportion of international students in 2022. Australia has removed the cap on the number of hours that international students can work until June of 2023; reflecting this, 36 percent of the students who switched their top countries to Australia cited better job opportunities as their reason. This improved work-study policy allows international students much better chances to earn enough money to live more comfortably during their stay abroad.
  • Lower currency — Also aligned with the growing concern for cost of living, the Australian dollar is low against the US dollar and several other currencies, making it a more affordable choice for most students.
  • Safety — Australia has been consistently ranked as one of the safest countries in the world. The results of the survey echo this, with Australia deemed to be the safest country for international students, followed by New Zealand and Canada.
  • Opportunities for permanent residency GSP’s Director for Australia and New Zealand, Matt Beazley, notes that the opportunities that come with living in regional Australia are also a key factor in Australia’s attractiveness to foreign students. Arguably the most popular among these opportunities is the improved pathways to permanent residency, with some certain courses. It should be noted that regional Australia also includes major cities like Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra, and the Gold Coast.

This upsurge of interest in pursuing higher education in Australia is fantastic news for the country’s educators, whose challenge is now to rise to meet the growing demand for Australian education; and as the number of student applicants continues to soar, recruiters and institutions can expect the amount of paperwork to grow right along with it.

Handling the paperwork can easily become one of the most time-consuming parts of the recruitment and admissions processes, but it’s also one of the most critical steps in a successful application. Without being tremendously well-organised, it can be easy to make blunders when dealing with huge volumes of paperwork, but GSP’s all-in-one technology platform empowers our partners to manage all pre-screening applications, conversions, and local recruitment with ease. With the power of tech, we’ve recast the traditional international student recruitment model into one that is more collaborative, more transparent, more comprehensive, and more intimate — all in pursuit of our mission to transform lives through education.

A big month for GSP in North America: what we have been doing

Our North American team has been hard at work this past month, travelling to different cities and building new connections to grow GSP’s network further. Here’s a quick update on what they’ve been up to recently.

 NAFSA 2022

Catherine Wilson, Pat Colabucci and and Kevin Morgan attended the NAFSA Regional Conferences in Sacramento, Albany, Charlotte, and Corpus Christi. NAFSA is the world’s biggest not-for-profit association dedicated to international education and exchange of which GSP is a proud and engaged NAFSA member.

At these events, our North American team network with many people in the industry, including several institutions that are looking to grow their international student numbers. The team also met many students and young professionals who are interested to learn more about what the industry has to offer.

To promote GSP at the events, the team handed out Tim Tams, a tasty milk chocolate-covered biscuit famous in Australia, where GSP is based. The team challenged fellow attendees to participate in the Tim Tam Slam—the signature Australian way of eating the biscuit: bite off opposite corners of the biscuit, use it as a straw to slurp up a hot beverage like coffee, hot chocolate or tea and, finally, pop the whole treat into your mouth in one go. It has been fun engaging with the conference participants, and at the same time, it also allowed us to show them another side of Australians we are quite fond of.

After a big month connecting with the fantastic industry of recruiters and education providers around the US, the team looks forward to attending the annual AIRC event in Los Angeles next month. Meet Pat, Catherine, and Kevin at booth 72 and have a go at the Tim Tam Slam!

Meeting with Westcliff University (WU)

Pat Colabucci, GSP’s Director for North America, met with Westcliff University (WU) in Irvine, California last month.  The GSP–WU partnership is off to an excellent start as the university welcomes 14 students from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and the Philippines. WU has expressed appreciation for the team’s support in effectively advising the students before they arrived in the U.S. The WU admission staff were also very pleased to see students getting their F1 visas and bringing diversity to the classrooms.

Located in one of the safest and most diverse cities in the U.S., WU is a private, award-winning university that offers plenty of exciting opportunities for scholarships, internships, and career services. The career and placement services for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT), in particular, have long been one of the greatest of WU’s attractions for students. In 2021, WU was also recognised by Best Value Schools as having one of the top graduate marketing programs.

WU has placed 85% of its graduates in jobs in 2021, and its 10:1 student-to-professor ratio ensures that every student gets the attention and support they need to complete their programs. With six start dates per year, various scholarship opportunities for international students, and several MBA STEM programs allowing a 3-year OPT, WU is poised for plenty of growth as a partner of GSP.

The university has also just announced that it has been approved by SEVP to now issue I-20s for the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS), Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT), and Doctor in Education (EdD) programs! This exciting news brings more opportunities to students hoping to become a Westcliff student.

USA: International student visas issued rebound to pre-pandemic record

The demand for US education remains unassailable around the world and is expected to keep rising, as  the end of the pandemic is in sight. In its annual report on Nonimigrant Visa Issuances by Visa Class and Nationality, the US Department of State revealed overwhelmingly positive student visa data, demonstrating soaring visa issued numbers supported by record-high approval rates.

The report showed that almost 358,000 international student visas were issued in the 2021 fiscal year (October 2020 to September 2021), nearly tying with the pre-pandemic numbers from the 2018 and 2019 fiscal years.

This is a huge comeback for US international education, given the drop in FY2020 caused by the COVID-19 situation, where visas issued totalled only 111,387.

Notably, there was also a significant rise in visa approval rates in FY2021, which greatly contributed to the surge of visas issued. Hitting a nine-year high, the student visa approval rate reached 80.2% after falling below 70% in the previous year.

South Asian Markets: Key Drivers of International Student Visa Growth

South Asian countries largely drove the boost in visa issuance numbers. The top four countries with the greatest increase in US student visas issued from FY2019 to FY2021 are all from South Asia: Bangladesh (+116.8%), Nepal (+93.3%), Pakistan (85.4%), and India (84.0%).

Among these four South Asian countries, India had the most visas issued, totalling over 80,000, only falling behind China by around 10,000. India’s rapid growth in the market means that it is well-positioned to surpass China as the US’ top source country for international students.

What does this mean for recruitment agents?

The recently released report means one thing for recruitment agents: it’s excellent news. But to break it down further, here’s why the new data offer a myriad of opportunities that you should make the most of, as early as now:

  • An increase in visas issued demonstrates a boost in student interest in studying in the US.

After over a year of closed borders, strict outdoor guidelines and online-only classes, students are raring to re-experience face-to-face classes, and more than that, to travel abroad to pursue their degrees. So, if you had trouble finding students to recruit in the past fiscal year, you can ease your worries this year: countless students are wanting to study in the US from all around the world, especially with the end of the pandemic in sight.

The surge in visas issued shows not only a positive outcome for this fiscal year but also the potential to keep rising in the next few years. And with the Department of State’s annual report made public, more students will realise that now is a time to start applying to US institutions.

That means you should be recruiting them now, too.

  • Higher approval rates reflect government efforts.

The substantial increase in F-1 student visa approval rates – a 10% recovery from the previous year and the best-recorded rate in nine years – shows that the US government is dedicated to prioritising international education to maintain the US’ place as one of the top study destinations in the world.

With the government now ready to offer much of its support to international students, it is ideal for bringing in more students to US campuses. as soon as possible. You can also offer your students greater reassurance that their visas will be approved if they decide to apply to US schools.

  • Data reveal massive opportunities in India.

International student visas issued in the past three fiscal years increased drastically in India. To put this into better perspective, visas issued in India in FY2019, FY2020 and FY2021 were recorded to be 43,714, 15,323 and 80,451, respectively.

Comparatively, visas issued in China in the same fiscal years totalled 105,775, 14,436 and 90,310, respectively. Note that China has been the US’ top source of international students for 12 consecutive years, so India catching up on the charts is a shift to look out for.

This upward trend for India (and its rivalling numbers against China) means that there are plenty of recruitment opportunities in India, along with other South Asian countries, that agents like you should be tapping into. There is a possibility that the number of international students from India will surpass that of China in the coming years, so it will be wise to focus your recruitment efforts on this market.

The demand for education in the United Kingdom has skyrocketed over the past few years, thanks to the United Kingdoms’s world-class infrastructure, globally recognised schools and opportunities for graduates. GSP’s Regional Manager in India, Nikita Gupta, who has been working in the international education industry for close to a decade now, can speak about this; based on her observations and experience, the UK is the ideal destination for students who are looking to study abroad to pursue a degree that is recognised internationally. Nikita was focused on Australia in the early stages of her career, but she has worked with education agencies and students keen to study in the UK. Nikita has gained heaps of insights into the UK as a destination for international students. In this article, Nikita answers some of the most important and frequently asked questions about assisting students with their application to a university in the UK.

What is the average student cycle from enquiry to commencement?

The first step to take when a student expresses an interest in studying in the UK is to counsel the student on the best university and course based on his/her requirements. On average, it takes around three-four weeks to secure an offer letter from a UK university. Once an offer is received, they then need to submit the financial documents to the university to receive the Certificate of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), which can take another two-three weeks. Once the CAS is procured, the visa is filed. The UK has a priority student visa category. So, in total, around three to four months is the average period from enquiry to visa lodging.

What are the challenges and benefits unique to the UK?

There are no major challenges when it comes to studying in the UK particularly. Some students may face a few challenges around fitting in and understanding the new culture, feeling lonely and homesick, difficulty in learning how to juggle their time between studying and a part-time job, making new friends, and of course, adjusting to the climate. But the good part is that all these challenges are temporary and can be resolved with a little hand-holding and support, which now all the universities make sure that they provide to international students.

Other benefits of studying in the UK are the availability of part-time jobs which is generally a great help for international students to meet their day-to-day expenses, an opportunity to apply for a post-study work permit, shorter course duration, and friendly government policies.

What is the biggest factor influencing a student’s decision to study in the UK?

When choosing a study abroad destination, students should consider multiple factors — not just where their friends are going. Other factors to consider include budget, university rankings, course availability, climate, proximity, and teaching quality. Another important factor to consider when deciding on the course offerings of a UK university is the students’ needs and interests. Students should conduct a needs analysis to determine the course offering that matches their requirements.

Any advice for agents?

Before promoting the advantages of studying in the UK, you first need to understand what’s keeping them from signing up. Communication is crucial and being able to listen to the students’ needs enables them to offer the right course and university. Never try to push what you want, but rather, find out what the students want and give them options based on their needs. Make them aware of both the pros and cons of living in a new country and working and studying at the same time so that students are well-prepared and ready to face the challenges. Lastly, transparency is the most important factor to which we at GSP always adhere to. We understand that each student has a unique need, and we make sure that the students are aware of what they are getting themselves into.

The United Kingdom has always been one of the most coveted destinations for international students. Over the past two years, however, the UK has seen a significantly higher influx of students from India in particular. According to a report by India Today, about 165,000 Indians have acquired student visas for the UK over the past three years alone, and as many as 107,978 Indian students were issued study visas to the UK in the year ending March 2022. This marks a 93% increase from the previous period.

Why the UK?

Among the most critical factors that make the UK attractive to Indian students is the opportunity that UK graduates have to launch a global career. Besides earning a degree from highly  regarded international institutions, UK graduates also gain a powerful network of friends and mentors — a key tool for growing a resourceful and successful career. Moreover, the UK also has a rich heritage and position in the global socioeconomic landscape; both India and the UK have been hard at work in their mission to internationalise higher education, closely collaborating to create plans for more cooperation in transnational education and implement more policies that support student mobility and bilateral opportunities for students.

Overall, here are five of the biggest factors that make the UK one of the most popular choices for Indians looking to pursue higher education abroad, according to India Today

    • Credibility – The UK is home to some of the best universities in the world, with four out of 10 of the top 10 universities globally coming from the UK according to the QS Global Rankings 2023. The UUKi’s International Graduate Outcomes report also found that 83% of international graduates from the UK feel that their degree enabled them to secure a job.
    • Employability – QS Graduate Employability Rankings consider UK graduates among the most employable in the world. With various internship and placement opportunities, alongside their new Graduate Route policy (allowing  international students to stay for two to three years in the UK post-graduation to work), the UK offers international students plenty of support to kickstart their careers.
    • Eligibility and Policy – India and the UK have a signed agreement on mutual recognition of academic qualifications, which supports more seamless acceptance of UK qualifications and allows all Indian graduates from the UK to pursue further studies, research, or employment when they return to India.
    • Affordability – Universities in the UK and the British government offer a host of scholarships for Indian students. On average, education in the UK costs also less in comparison to other popular foreign education destinations.
    • Liveability – The UK’s large Indian population creates a cultural bridge between the two countries.  The UK is a melting pot of different cultures, making it a great environment for international students to gain  new cultural experiences. In support of this, UK universities network international students to faculty, mentors, and fellow students with similar backgrounds,  allowing access to emotional and academic support.

Where are most international students in the UK coming from?

Indians are now the second-largest group of international students in the UK, but the UK has always been one of the top choices for international students across the world for several years running. Arranged in descending order, here are the top ten countries of origin of international students in the UK as of 2022:

  1. China (143,820 students)
  2. India (84,555 students)
  3. Nigeria (21,305 students)
  4. USA (19,220 students)
  5. Hong Kong (16,655 students)
  6. Italy (14,605 students)
  7. France (14,090 students)
  8. Pakistan (12,975 students)
  9. Romania (12,860 students)
  10. Spain (12,290 students)

Scholarships for international students wanting to study in the UK and Europe

Deciding to study abroad is an investment in every student’s future. A degree from a prestigious institution can improve a student’s options for employability and overall quality of life. However, finding one that fits a student’s budget and requirements can be exhaustive.

For education counsellors, it is disappointing to know that the students you are counselling have the academic aptitude and drive to get into a highly-regarded institution but may not have the financial capability to gain entry into one.

Luckily, most institutions offer scholarships and bursaries to help international students gain entry to a program or for the smart ones; it might even stretch to the whole duration of their program. The most common funding option available is a bursary that offers a tuition fee discount and may or may not have additional academic requirements on top of the standard entry requirements.

For students planning to study in the UK or European universities, here are some scholarship opportunities that you should let your students know about:
